Making & Fabrication

Physical builds and 3D printing — where ideas become objects.

Overview

Physical making is where software ideas and real-world constraints meet. I use FDM 3D printing as my primary fabrication tool — designing parts in CAD and iterating quickly to get functional results.

Most builds are practical: enclosures for electronics, custom mounts, replacement parts, and prototypes for ideas that need to exist as objects before they can be properly evaluated. The STL files themselves are sometimes generated with Extrudel — which converts images into printable lithophane geometry.

3D Design

My primary 3D design tool for fabrication is Fusion 360 — parametric modelling that lets you design with intent rather than just geometry. Parameters mean a bracket can be resized in seconds, a tolerance adjusted without rebuilding from scratch, and the design history stays readable when you come back to it six months later. Most of what I print starts here: functional parts designed around real constraints from the first sketch.

Blender handles the other side of it — organic forms, product visualisation, and renders that actually communicate what something is going to look like before it exists physically. Being able to light, shade, and render a model properly is a different skill from building it, and both matter when the goal is to present work clearly or evaluate a design before committing to print time.

Professional BIM and MEP work adds a layer of precision discipline that carries over: modelling with real tolerances, understanding how geometry translates to physical space, and producing work that can be built from rather than just viewed. That background keeps the design grounded in what's actually achievable.
